Fall Safety in Older Adults — Transfer Safety
Why Fall Safety Matters
One in four adults age 65+ falls each year, often during everyday activities such as standing, transferring, or moving around the home.
Falls can result in serious injuries, loss of independence, and hospitalization.
Safe Transfer Techniques
Transfers are moments when falls commonly occur — especially out of beds, chairs, toilets, and vehicles. Always move slowly and stop if unsteady.
1. Using a Gait Belt (Safe Support)
A gait belt is a sturdy strap placed around the waist to help secure and steady a person during transfers.
Used for bed/couch/toilet/wheelchair/etc. to standing transfers. Gait belt may also be helpful for some of the more complex transfers described below.

2. Walker/Wheelchair & Car Transfers
Transferring safely into/out of a car often includes positioning, bracing, and gait belt use.

4. Shower / Tub Transfers
Why it’s risky
Wet, slippery surface
High tub edge to step over
Balance challenges with one foot elevated
What to do
✔ Use a transfer bench or shower chair to sit while entering/exiting.
✔ Install grab bars in tub/shower area.
✔ Use non-slip matting on floor.

Assistive Devices That Support Safe Transfers & Reduce Falls
Core Transfer & Stability Devices
Gait belts — help caregivers guide patients through a transfer.
Grab bars & handrails — fixed supports near toilets, showers, beds.
Raised toilet seats / Toilet seat risers — improve ease and safety of sitting/standing.
Transfer boards (slide boards) — smooth boards allow safe sliding between surfaces (e.g., bed ↔ wheelchair).
Mechanical Aids
Hoyer / patient lifts — powered or hydraulic lifts that safely lift a person with little physical strain on the caregiver.
Stand-assist units — help a person rise from sitting to standing safely.
Other Helpful Tools
Bed rails — assist with getting in/out of bed.
Non-slip mats — improve traction in bathrooms.
Motion-sensor lighting — reduces trips at night.
Tips for Caregivers
✔ Communicate every step with your loved one before moving.
✔ Always lock wheelchair brakes and remove footrests before transferring. (See linked video instructions.)
✔ Use proper body mechanics — bend your knees, keep your back straight — to protect yourself as well as the person you’re helping.
✔ If a transfer feels unsafe at any point, stop and reassess or seek professional assistance.
