Motorized recliner chairs - Medicare pay for? (GJ 12/1/24)
● Medicare pays 80% of the cost for motorized lifting device (not chair itself) in recliner chair if ALL of the following are met: patient has severe arthritis of hip or knee or a severe neuromuscular disease, patient is completely incapable of standing up from regular chair, patient can walk with/without assistive device once standing, and the seat lift mechanism is part of the physician's course of treatment (1)
● Chair must be provided by medicare approved supplier. Go to medicare.gov, enter zip code, select "seat lift mechanisms" category, search through directory of suppliers with "M" symbol which indicates they accept medicare assignment (1, 2)
● Certain "infinite" power lift recliners have programmable "memory positions", in theory this might allow caregivers to set predetermined lift heights (3)
